Hunger strike in Amed continues on third day

The hunger strike launched with demand of immediate access to Abdullah Öcalan continues on its third day.

The indefinite-irreversible hunger strike launched in Amed led by DTK, HDK, KJA, DBP and HDP demanding immediate access to Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan, who hasn’t been heard from since April 5, 2015 and whose safety is of concern since the coup attempt, continues on its third day. The demonstration was visited by large groups yesterday.

“WE WANT TO HEAR FROM ÖCALAN”

The public interest was high throughout the day, while the hunger strikers were visited by Democratic Society Congress (DTK) Co-Chair Hatip Dicle, Peoples’ Democratic Congress (HDK) Co-spokespersons Gülistan Kılıç Koçyiğit and Ertuğrul Kürkçü, Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Co-chairs Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ in the morning. HDK Co-spokesperson Ertuğrul Kürkçü and HDP Co-chair Figen Yüksekdağ spoke in the visit and protested Minister of Justice Bekir Bozdağ’s comments on İmralı, stating that they “wanted to hear from Öcalan not Bozdağ.”

VISIT BY FAMILIES OF MARTYRS FROM SUR

In the afternoon, families of people who lost their lives during the Sur resistance, members of Peace Mothers Assembly, Amed Metropolitan Municipality Co-mayor Fırat Anlı, Bağlar Municipality Co-mayor Birsen Kaya, DBP and HDP district branches, MEYA-DER, Bağlar and Kayapınar Municipality workers also visited the demonstration in support.

“CONCERNS GROW EVERY DAY”

In the evening, Asrın Law Office lawyers who have been advocating Öcalan in Istanbul and Ankara, and Dicle Fırat Center for Arts and Culture artists visited the demonstration in support. Öcalan’s lawyer İbrahim Bilmez gave a speech on behalf of the lawyers and said not hearing from Öcalan has made the concerns grow further every day, and that they wished the hunger strike would lead to peace.

A guest book titled “Notes to İmralı” has been placed at the door of Vedat Aydın Conference Hall in DBP Amed Province headquarters for visitors to write their thoughts and feelings about the hunger strike and Öcalan.

TODAY WILL SEE A FLOW OF VISITORS

The 50 hunger strike activists will be visited by many groups today as well.
