Hunger strikes in South Kurdistan continue

In Hewlêr, HDP Member Nasir Yagiz has been on hunger strike for 59 days and has reached a critical threshold.

Hunger strikes against the isolation of Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan continue in Bashûrê (South) Kurdistan.

Hewlêr

The hunger strike launched in Hewlêr (Erbil), has reached day 59.

The 30th group of activists took over the hunger strike after a press release.

HDP South Kurdistan representative, Müzeyen Güneş said that isolation should be removed as soon as possible.

“The Kurdish people should stand firmly against the Turkish state's occupation attacks. The Kurdish people must resist the attacks against Bakur (North), Başûr (South) and Rojava (West) Kurdistan.”

Güneş added: “It was important to have first hand news about Mr Öcalan [from his brother Mehmet who was allowed to visit him for 15 minutes], but isolation has not been lifted. Our claim is for Mr. Öcalan to be completely removed from isolation. Families and lawyers must be allowed to hold regular visits. The aggravated isolation must be lifted as soon as possible."

In Hewlêr also HDP Member Nasir Yagiz has been on hunger strike for 59 days. Yağız's health situation has reached a critical threshold.

Yağız has lost 10 pounds and is suffering from nausea and high blood pressure.

Sulaymaniyah

The hunger strike initiated by activists at the Mesopotamian Workers Association in Sulaymaniyah has reached day 36.

Members of the Kirkuk Office of the Democratic People's Front visited the hunger strike and supported the action.

Zamo Kerkuki, member of the Kirkuk Office of the Democratic People’s Front said they would support the hunger-strike actions initiated to demand the end of isolation. Kerkuki called upon everyone to resist.

Maxmur

The hunger strike, launched on 16 December, at Rüstem Cudi (Maxmur) refugee camp has reached day 34.

The hunger strike was taken over by the 12th group after the release of a new press statement.

Activist Elî Özgün said: “We will continue our action until isolation against Leader Apo is ended. Isolation should be lifted as soon as possible and Leader Apo should be freed.”
