KCK: This will be the Newroz of Freedom and Democratic Society

The KCK said in a statement that "this year, Newroz will be welcomed by the peoples with great enthusiasm, longing, and joy."

The co-presidency of the KCK (Kurdistan Communities Union) issued a statement about this year's Newroz celebration, saying that "this will be the Newroz of Freedom and Democratic Society, and Kurdish women and young people are leading the way in this."

The statement said: "Like our people, we are also looking forward to the millennia-old festivities of Newroz with great anticipation. Newroz, which developed, as the legend says, as an expression of resistance against the cruel tyrant Dehak and as a resurrection of a people that has been assumed dead, has been kept alive and celebrated by the peoples of ancient Mesopotamia, Iran, Anatolia, the Caucasus, and the Middle East for thousands of years. For thousands of years, peoples have been resisting oppression, exploitation, and annihilation with the spirit of Newroz, giving it its true meaning of beauty and freedom.

Today, Newroz is welcomed by the peoples with great enthusiasm, longing, and joy, with the same spirit and just as it was by the ancient Mesopotamian peoples, particularly the women and the youth among them, and all those who feel the warmth of the Newroz fire in their hearts. With this in mind, we wish all those who feel this spirit to carry it forward and resist a happy Newroz 2025!"

The statement added: "Newroz has the single greatest meaning for the Kurdish people. Throughout history, whenever oppressors wanted to annihilate them, they put up a resistance that was always in line with the Newroz spirit, and they always managed to resurrect. It was in the face of this historical reality that Rêber Apo [Abdullah Öcalan] said, 'The Kurdish People are the People of Newroz'. This historical truth is being experienced in all its concreteness. With this historical consciousness, we celebrate the Newroz of the resilient people of Kurdistan.

There are historical individuals who played a decisive role in the creation of Newroz and in bringing it to the present day. The blacksmith called Kawa is remembered in history as the one who started the tradition of Newroz by leading the revolt of the Kurdish people and the ancient Mesopotamian peoples against the tyranny of Dehak. In our time, Newroz was rekindled and regained its historical meaning with the spark that Mazlum Dogan lit in the darkness of the prisons. The spark lit by Mazlum Dogan, the modern Kawa, has turned into a great flame that warms the hearts and illuminates the path of millions. As we celebrate this beautiful, sacred and meaningful day, we must commemorate with respect, love, longing, and gratitude those who sacrificed their lives for it and gave us this gift. With these feelings, we commemorate our modern day Kawa Mazlum Dogan and all the martyrs of the revolution and the struggle for democracy by commemorating Zekiye, Rahshan, Ronahi, and Berivan."

The statement continued: "We particularly wish a happy Newroz to Rêber Apo. On the occasion of celebrating this historic day, we express our deep respect and greetings to our leader, the creator of our struggle, who has been leading this Newroz People for over half a century and has given us and our people a new horizon with his most recent historic ‘Call for Peace and Democratic Society’. Rêber Apo’s historic call has given a new meaning to this year’s Newroz. Our people, with the strength and morale they received from it, have decided to welcome this year’s Newroz as the Newroz of ensuring the physical freedom of Rêber Apo and creating a Democratic Society. This attitude of our people is very meaningful. It is very clear that in a very critical period of history, Rêber Apo has opened a new horizon of freedom for the Kurdish people in particular and for all the peoples of the Middle East and the world with his call. The way out of the world of oppression, exploitation, war, crisis, and chaos created by capitalist modernity is through a democratic society. In this respect, embracing Rêber Apo’s historic call and fighting for the realization of this call has a historical meaning.

We also wish a happy Newroz to our international comrades and friends. They have contributed a great deal to our struggle, reaching this stage. Again, the global campaign for the physical freedom of Rêber Apo and the democratic solution to the Kurdish question, which was launched on October 10, 2023, and was led by our international comrades and friends, has made a great contribution to the negotiations with Rêber Apo and his call, which we see as the manifesto of the era. These comrades and friends have played a historical role. We are convinced that they will continue to do so in the future and will further strengthen the struggle for the physical freedom of Rêber Apo and the realization of the paradigm of democratic society."

The KCK ended with the following remarks: "With these feelings and thoughts in mind, first and foremost, we call on our people to take to the streets and fields to celebrate Newroz. Millions of people from all parts of Kurdistan and our people outside the country will enthusiastically celebrate Newroz. They welcome Newroz by lighting fires, wearing their traditional clothes, dancing their traditional dances, chanting, and singing freedom songs. By filling the squares on the occasion of Newroz, they shout out the most fundamental demand for the physical freedom of Rêber Apo. Our people everywhere welcome and celebrate the 2025 Newroz as the Newroz of Freedom and Democratic Society, and Kurdish women and youth are leading the way in this. As our people are demanding, the Imrali system must be completely dismantled and abolished immediately. In order for the “Call for Peace and Democratic Society” to come to life, Rêber Apo must regain his physical freedom, and free working conditions must be ensured.

Once again, with the warmth of the Newroz fire, we congratulate everyone on Newroz and wish that Newroz will bring peace, democracy, and freedom to everyone in a free Kurdistan, a democratic Turkey, and a democratic Middle East by expanding the struggle on the basis of the physical freedom of Rêber Apo."
