The Kurdistan National Congress (KNK) sees Wednesday’s deadly Turkish attack on the Shengal region as a continuation of the ISIS massacres and called for a global protest.
The Kurdistan National Congress (KNK) released a statement calling for protest after the deadly attack by Turkish UCAVs on the Sinunê People's Council on Wednesday. Stationer Xidir Şivan Naso and his ten-year-old grandson Salih Xidir Naso were killed in the attack. Six other people, including journalist Salih Berçes, were injured.
The KNK statement released on Thursday includes the following:
"We condemn the Turkish state and its collaborators and offer our condolences to the Naso family and the Kurdish people. We wish the injured a speedy recovery. All those killed and injured are civilians from Sinunê, which belongs to the Shengal region and is home to Yazidis. This area was already the scene of massacres and crimes against humanity under ISIS occupation in 2014. Since the defeat of ISIS, the Turkish army has attacked Shengal dozens of times and targeted the Yazidi population. The attacks by the Turkish state are a continuation of the ISIS massacres and are carried out with genocidal intent.
Turkey wants to take advantage of the current situation and intensify its attacks on the Kurdish people. For more than two months, the Turkish state has been attacking the forces of the Kurdistan Freedom Movement with all its might and also with chemical weapons. It threatens Rojava and attacks the region again and again. Now the Turkish state attacked Shengal again and murdered two people. Especially in the context of NATO enlargement, NATO officials and representatives of many NATO countries say they understand Turkey's security concerns. This gives Erdoğan and his regime the courage and the opportunity to expand the attacks on the Kurdish people.
Do those who speak of Turkey's security concerns also understand the dangers that the children in Shengal face? Do they see the murder of Xidir Şivan Naso and his ten-year-old grandson Salih Xidir Naso? What do these people say about this massacre? We also want to hear their opinion on this issue.
The people in Shengal need humanitarian aid. Shengal and especially the children of the region and the Yazidi people need protection. We call on the humanist and democratic world, on everyone with a conscience, to rise up against the Turkish attacks, to defend the people of Shengal and their children, and to stand with the Kurdish people."
