Legendary Commander Egîd’s statue to be erected in Kobanê tomorrow

The statue made for the memory of the legendary commander Mahsum Korkmaz’s (Egîd) will be erected in the Resistance Square in Kobanê city center.

Mahsum Korkmaz, code name Egîd, the PKK commander who heroically resisted the colonialist invading Turkish state and became a legend with the August 15, 1984 Lunge, had fallen martyr with a group of his comrades in a clash with the Turkish army in Gabar on March 28, 1986. Since that day, Commander Egîd took his place in the heart of the people of Kurdistan and his valor traveled from mouth to mouth.

To commemorate Commander Egîd, a blacksmith in Kobanê made his sculpture. The statue is made of iron and it will be erected at the Resistance Square in the city center of Kobanê, fortress of resistance, tomorrow.

Kobanê citizens are preparing to flock to the square for the erecting of the statue tomorrow. It is 3 meters tall and 70 cm wide. Its pedestal is 120 cm wide and 90 cm thick.

Commander Egîd’s statue has the guerrilla uniform he wore at the time. He is holding a Kalashnikov and his face is looking up. The statue represents victory and prevision.

The statue weighs 2 tonnes and is filled with cement. To preserve the statue longer, it was painted with 3 coats and has been polished.

Blacksmith of 20 years Neşet Eme made the statue. Neşet Eme lives in Kobanê’s Kaniya Kurda neighborhood. He says he made the statue on his own and it took 8 months. YPG forces provided financial aid for Neşet Eme in the making of the statue.

Kobanê Canton Authorities decided the statue will be erected at the Resistance Square in front of the TEV-DEM headquarters. The Resistance Square is right in the middle of Kobanê. After the statue is erected, the square will be renamed 'Meydana Fermandar Egîd', i.e. 'Commander Egid Square'.
