Man tortured in Xerabê Bava disappeared in custody

Whereabouts is not known of civilian Abdi Aykut who was taken into custody after getting tortured by state forces in Xerabê Bava village of Nusaybin. Aykut's wife says he might have been executed.

Abdi Aykut, a resident of the Xerabê Bava village in Mardin's Nusaybin district, was violently beaten by Turkish state forces that raided his house when he was home alone.

The man, who lied in his garden fainted for two days, was later covered in a blanket and taken into custody by state forces. His medical condition got even worse while in custody, upon which he was taken to Nusaybin State Hospital. Aykut's hospital records were later cleared and no news about has been received about his aftermath since. Aykut's wife Vetha Aykut told that her husband is a cardiac patient, and that they think he has been executed. The woman said state forces set fire to their house after taking her husband from their garden in a blanket.

Vetha and Abdi Aykut went to Mardin's Kızıltepe district to take their daughter to university in early February. The woman told: “My husband went back to the village on February 10 to sell our two cows there. The village was placed under siege after that, and he remained there. What I know is that he went to his sister's house after the siege began. Once they ran out of supplies in his sister's house, he went back to our house, on the sixth day of the siege, to get something to eat. There he was attacked and violently beaten by state forces who later threw him into the garden. I was talking to him on phone until that incident. I once heard state forces saying 'Shoot and kill them' as we spoke. Then the phone went dead. I called a neighborhood whose phone was also seized by soldiers. I then heard the soldiers saying 'kill him and throw him in the garden'. He remained in the garden, fainted, for two days. After that, I learned that soldiers went back to our house, covered him in a blanket and took him into custody. He was later taken to hospital as his health deteriorated while in custody."

Vetha Aykut told that they afterwards called the hospital and learned that he was there, after which his hospital records were cleared, and no news is available about his aftermath since then.

"They later cleared his hospital records and denied that he was in hospital. We do not know where he is at the moment. We think that he was most probably executed. They killed and then disappeared him, and now they want to reflect his death as "he was killed in a clash".

Vetha Aykut stated that state forces set fire to their house after the detention of her husband, adding: "Where else is such an atrocity committed? Where is my husband? We will definitely bring those responsible to account."
