Nasir Yagiz has been on a hunger strike for 97 days and his body continues to weaken. Yagiz has been having trouble sleeping for a while, and now he is unable to stand up.
Nasir Yagiz stands out as the longest standing hunger striker after HDP MP Leyla Guven. Yagiz started his hunger strike 13 days after Hakkari MP and DTK Co-chair Leyla Guven went on a hunger strike on November 8, 2018 while she was still in the Diyarbakir Prison to demand an end to the isolation imposed upon Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Ocalan.
Yagiz has been on a hunger strike for 97 days. There have been alarming news about his health in the last week. He has been having trouble sleeping, and hasn’t been able to stand up on his own after he woke up.
As the 100th day of the hunger strike draws near, he can no longer sleep or stand up at all. He is only able to leave his bed in the morning with help from his companions and doctors.
Despite his weakening bod, Yagiz says he has faith his protest will prevail and the isolation imposed upon Ocalan will be broken.
Yagiz’s doctor Dure Mihemed Uren says his condition is serious, and that he has lost 14 kilos already.
Dr. Uren pointed out that Yagiz’s circulation has also slowed down: “He has trouble seeing as his eyes are weakened. He has nausea and headaches.”
His pain gets more severe at night and keeps him from sleeping. Yagiz is weakened further with every passing hour, and faces permanent health issues.
Dr. Uren said: “Yagiz refuses treatment. His health continues to deteriorate. He has issues with extreme weight loss, high blood pressure and trouble seeing and moving about.”
After Yagiz, an indefinite nonalternating hunger strike was launched in the Maxmur refugee camp on January 20. Ishtar Assembly member Fadile Tok’s hunger strike is on day 37.
