The Van Security Directorate, unable to build outposts wherever they pleased when DBP had the municipality, has sprung into action once more with the appointment of trustees. One of the buildings the police want to turn into an outpost is the Nuda Cultural Center, opened by DBP’s Van Metropolitan Municipality 2 years ago.
The Van Security Directorate has wanted to build outposts in several central locations including the old Customs building for the last 2 years. They submitted their appeal to the Ministry of Interior Affairs and the General Directorate of Security during the Kobanê events of October 6-7, 2014 and their appeal was approved.
But a crisis arose when the Van Security Directorate demanded to build an outpost in the area that included the old customs building, designated by the İpekyolu Municipality to build a park. After much discussion, the İpekyolu Municipality turned the area in question into an Art Park and opened it to the public.
The old public hospital had collapsed in the earthquake in Van, and the plot it had been located on was turned into an outpost by the Security Directorate despite efforts by DBP’s Metropolitan Municipality’s attempts to turn it into a park.
The Van Security Directorate failed to implement their idea of turning designated public spaces and parks during the time of DBP municipalities, and they sprung back into action when trustees were appointed.
The Van Security Directorate continued with their efforts to build an outpost in the Art Park, while reports say the Nuda Cultural Center in Hacıbekir (Xaçort) Neighborhood, opened to the public by DBP’s Metropolitan Municipality 2 years ago, will be given to the İpekyolu Security Directorate.
Van Metropolitan Municipality trustee Governor İbrahim Taşyapan had shut down the Women’s Life Center for not having the correct licenses, and there are reports that that center may also be turned into an outpost as per the Security Directorate’s demand.
