Body of Erdal Şahin, one of the victims of the savage Cizre massacre by Turkish 'security forces', has been delivered to his hometown Hakkari today for burial.
Şahin's body was firstly brought to Hakkari State Hospital last night and was taken from the hospital today by hundreds who accompanied him to Serê Sola Cemetery with a long convoy.
DTK co-chair Selma Irmak and Hakkari deputy Nihat Akdoğan also joined the funeral for which hundreds marched to the cemetery to lay him to rest two weeks after being massacred.
Police forces attacked the mass on the way to the cemetery with rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannons. A number of people were taken into custody while many other affected by intense tear gas were hospitalized.
Despite the heavy crackdown, people managed to reach the cemetery chanting the slogan “Şehid namirin” (Martyrs are immortal). Following one minute's silence for the martyrs of the struggle for freedom and democracy, Şahin was laid to rest.
Family of the Cizre victim received condolences in a tent set up in Karşıyaka neighborhood after the burial.
