Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has made a statement on the investigation on the death of Kurdish university student Kemal Kurkut who was executed by police before the beginning of celebration at Newroz area in Amed on 21 March “on suspicion of being a suicide bomber” although he was half naked.
According to the statement, two police officers were taken into custody in the scope of the investigation launched into the murder, one of whom was released after giving his statement, while the other who was referred to court with a demand for his arrest was also released on condition of judicial control.
Kemal Kurkut, born in Adıyaman, was a student in the İnönü University Fine Arts Faculty Department of Music. He lived in Malatya and came to Amed to join the Newroz celebration.
Following the incident, Turkish officials grounded the execution on "suspicion of being a suicide bomber”, a claimed denied by the family who was contacted later.
Photos emerging after the execution show that half naked Kemal Kurkut had an argument with the police at the Newroz Park checkpoint on Evrim Alataş Avenue. Then he passed the checkpoint and started to walk towards the grounds, which was when the police shot the young man.
Kurkut ran some 10-15 meters, clutching his wound, then fell down behind the water cannon on the side of the road. Kurkut was hospitalized by the ambulance that arrived some 10 minutes later, and lost his life there.
Books were found later in the pocket of the young student who was executed, half naked, before the cameras.
