Shopkeepers take to the streets in Hewlêr

Many shopkeepers took to the streets in Hewlêr, the capital of the Federal Kurdistan Region, to protest the relocation of their places in violation of the contract made with them.

Shopkeepers reacted to the decision by Hewlêr Municipality to close their workplaces without their consent and relocate them to another area.

The contract signed by the shopkeepers allows them to work in the same place until 2038. They also state that they have paid the necessary rent until the said year.

Shopkeepers said that the contract was violated arbitrarily and closed the Hewlêr-Mosul highway to traffic in protest.

The Asayish (internal police) affiliated with the KDP intervened, opening fire in the air. The shopkeepers warned that they would continue their protest if the government did not abandon its decision.
