Teachers' boycott in South Kurdistan continues

Teachers not given their salaries in southern Kurdistan (northern Iraq) organised boycott protests in many cities.

Teachers and civil servants in the cities of Sulaymaniyah, Halabja, Germiyan and Raperîn and Koye district of Hewlêr (Erbil) have been continuing their protests for four months.

Teachers gathered in front of the education directorates in Halabja, Germiyan, Koye and Raperîn on Wednesday and protested the non-payment of their salaries.

Teachers expressed their reactions to the fact that the Kurdistan Region Government has deprived teachers of their basic right to salaries by increasing taxes.

The teachers also demanded an immediate response to their demands for appointment and called on the government to pay their salaries.

Teachers emphasised that the regional government's pressure and threats cannot prevent their demands for their rights.

The Kurdistan Region Ministry of Education announced in a statement recently that two of the five demands of teachers would be met through the implementation of the Iraqi Budget Law. The announcement was met by teachers with reactions, vowing that their protests would continue.
