40 people, 32 of whom are in prison now, that had been trapped in in Amed’s Sur district due to 104 day-long clashes and later evacuated, have appeared in court today for the first time after 10 months.
Dicle News Agency (DİHA) journalist Mazlum Dolan is among the civilians prosecuted at Diyarbakır 5th High Criminal Court, for 20 of whom aggravated life sentence is sought for "disrupting the unity of the state." Dolan and the rest of the detainees are accused of "membership to a terrorist organisation" and "violating the law on meetings and demonstrations."
Dilşad Şengül was defending herself in Kurdish like the other defendants when the presiding judge interrupted her and asked her to go back to her seat, saying "The suspect is telling a story".
In response to the restriction of her right to defense, Şengül insisted to continue to speak, upon which the presiding judge ordered the gendarmes to take the suspect out of the hearing room.
Şengül and other arrestees objected to the instruction, after which they were attacked by policemen and gendarmes already deployed in the hearing room.
Attacked by 'security forces' right before the court board, the defendants chanted "Human dignity will triumph over torture" and "Bijî Serok Apo" [Long Live Öcalan].
Jailed defendant Remziye Tosun was dragged on the ground and her 3-year-old daughter Beritan was forcibly taken away from her.
Police and gendarmes also attacked the families of the defendants and forcibly took them out of the hearing room. The aggression also continued in the corridors of the courthouse.
There are no defendants left in the hearing room but only the court board, prosecutor, lawyers, police and gendarmes.
