Two months since last communication with prisoners in Şırnak

The last communication with prisoners that have been sick and injured in Şırnak took place two months ago when the genocidal attacks began in the city.

After the declaration of the curfew and the beginning of the genocidal attacks in Şırnak on March 14, entrance to and exit from the city have been prohibited and the communication with prisoners in Şırnak T-type Closed Prison with the capacity of 800 prisoners has been cut off. There are nearly 1000 inmates, 300 of whom are political, in the prison at the moment.

Political and other prisoners have not been allowed to communicate with the outside world, have been deprived of their right to a phone call since March 8, and have not been able to see the families since March 14.

UNABLE TO ATTEND TRIALS

Prisoners have not been able to attend their trials either, or even use their right of defense through the SEGBİS system, over the past two months.

SHOPPING PROHIBITED

Lawyers couldn't obtain any information on the medical condition and the needs of their clients for more than two months now, and the prisoners have been prohibited from shopping at the commissary in the prison where water has been cut.

UNABLE TO RECEIVE TREATMENT

According to the prisoners’ lawyers, the inmates that were injured during the genocidal attacks when they got arrested in Cizre and Silopi have not been able to take care of themselves and the infirmary has been closed. Şırnak Public Hospital has not been admitting any new patients so the prisoners have no way of receiving treatment.

Many of the political prisoners have been exiled to other locations that have been kept hidden from the families of the prisoners. Prisoners’ lawyers applied to the prison infirmary in order to obtain information on their clients whose access to the outside world has been cut off for more than two months now, and received the scandalous response of ‘We are not authorized’ from the infirmary.
