10 detained as Ankara police attack demo for HDP municipalities

Brutal crackdown against the people reclaiming the usurped municipalities continues.

Protests continue to reclaim the HDP-run metropolitan municipalities of Amed (Diyarbakır), Mardin and Van which were usurped by the AKP regime on August 19 through the removal of elected co-mayors and appointment of trustees in their place.

Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Ankara branch promoted a sit-in at the central Sakarya Square to protest against the seizure of three municipalities. The demonstration, which also saw the support of labor and democratic forces, was brutally attacked by the police. 10 people were battered and detained during the crackdown, including HDP provincial administrator Betül Koca and HDP Mamak district administrator Abuzer Kısa.

Police chief threatened HDP Ankara branch co-chair Zeyno Bayramoğlu, saying “we will teach you to be respectful”.
