Citing the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, Reuters reported on Monday that Israel has killed 11 Palestinian journalists in air strikes in Gaza since Oct. 7.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reported that the Israel-Gaza conflict has taken a severe toll on journalists since Hamas launched its unprecedented attack against Israel on October 7 and Israel a war in return, which has since widened to neighboring Lebanon.
As of Monday, October 16, 12 journalists were confirmed dead: 10 Palestinian, one Israeli, and one Lebanese. CPJ is also investigating reports of journalists injured, arrested, or threatened, and damage to multiple media offices.
“CPJ emphasizes that journalists are civilians doing important work during times of crisis and must not be targeted by warring parties,” said Sherif Mansour, CPJ’s Middle East and North Africa program coordinator. “Millions across the world are counting on reporters in the region to provide accurate information about the conflict. Journalists, like all civilians, must be respected and protected.”
