A total of 285 children aged between 0 and 6 are living with their mothers in Turkish prisons. There are 4,838 female prisoners in Turkish jails, according to the figures released by the Turkish Ministry of Justice.
The number of prisoners in Turkish jails was recorded to be 136, 20 at the end of 2012, included 4,838 women making up the 3,56 percent of the population in Turkish jails, Cihan news agency has reported on Tuesday.
There are only three open prisons for women across the country, hosting 572 women despite having a capacity of 1,395 people.
Five closed prisons for women, with a capacity of 2,256 people, are hosting 1,481 female prisoners- including those convicted and on remand. A total of 2,813 female prisoners are being held in other type of jails not passing for women's prisoners.
The number of female inmates jailed for political reasons has not been disclosed.
Article 65 of the Law on the Execution of Sentences and Security Measures no. 5275 allows the staying of children in 0-6 age group with their convicted mothers in the event that they do not have anyone to look after them outside.
