According to most recently released data by Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜÝK), 4,325 women have been driven to suicide in the last five years. Cases of suicide were mainly seen between the ages of 15 and 19.
TÜÝK Diyarbakýr Regional Directorate has released databases on cases of suicide between the years of 2007 and 2011. Accordingly, 14,117 people, including 9,792 men and 4,325 women, have committed suicide in the last five years.
According to databases by TUÝK, the reason for the suicide of 2,066 women couldn’t be determined, while 667 among them were driven to suicide due to domestic violence.
The highest rate of suicides was seen in the age group of 15-19, which is followed by the age range of 20-24 and 25-29.
The main reasons for suicides were listed as domestic violence, financial difficulty, emotional relations and obstacle to marry the desired partner.
According to TUÝK, the number of suicides in the last five years are as follows;
2007: 985 women, 1,808 men; 2,793 in total
2008: 892 women, 1,924 men; 2,816 in total
2009: 787 women, 2,111 men; 2, 898 in total
2010: 860 women, 2,073 men; 2, 933 in total
2011: 801 women, 1,876 men; 2,677 in total
