5.6 magnitude earthquake leaves 44 injured in Iran

At least 44 people were injured in a 5.6 magnitude earthquake in Sisakht, Iran.

An earthquake of 5.6 magnitude occurred on Wednesday in the Iranian city of Sisakht, about 500 kilometers south of the capital Tehran, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Approximately 6 thousand people live in Sisakht, which is an agricultural area.

According to Iranian media outlets, 44 people were injured in the earthquake. The extent of the material damage has not been disclosed yet.

An earthquake occurs on average every day in Iran which is located on seismic faults.

In November 2017, 620 people lost their lives in a 7.3 magnitude earthquake in the Kermanshah province of Eastern Kurdistan.

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake in the southeastern Kerman province in 2003 destroyed the old city Bam, leaving at least 31 thousand people dead.

The deadliest earthquake of the last 30 years occurred in the north of the country in 1990 with a magnitude of 7.4. As many as 40 thousand people died and half a million people were left homeless.
