5.8 magnitude earthquake in Iran

There has been a 5.8 magnitude earthquake in the north-east of Iran.

According to the Iranian seismology center, the earthquake that occurred 8 kilometers deep in the city of Sangan caused no damages. Sangan, with a population of around 10,000, is on the border with Afghanistan.

On 27 December, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake occurred 45 kilometers from the Bushehr nuclear power plant in the southwest of the country.

At the beginning of November 2019, at least 5 people lost their lives and 120 people were injured in the 5.9 magnitude earthquake that occurred 120 kilometers south-east of Tabriz city in East Azerbaijan province.

Iran laid on many tectonic plates. In November 2017, 620 people were killed in a 7.3 magnitude earthquake in the Kurdistan province of Eastern Kurdistan.

In 2003, the 6.6-magnitude earthquake in the southeastern province of Kerman destroyed the old city of Bam, killing at least 31,000 people.

The most fatal earthquake of the last 30 years was of 7.4 magnitude and it occurred in the north of the country in 1990, leaving 40,000 dead and half a million homeless.
