5 detained as police attack TAYAD members in Ankara

Ankara police attacked a group of people who called for action for lawyers and prisoners on death fast.

Imprisoned lawyers Ebru Timtik and Aytaç Ünsal from the People’s Legal Bureau (Halkın Hukuk Bürosu, HHB) and their clients Didem Akman and Özgür Karakaya have been on death fast for months demanding a fair trial.

A group of people from the Association of Solidarity with the Families of Prisoners (TAYAD) gathered in Turkish capital Ankara on Monday to submit a petition to the Court of Appeals calling for action for the death fast activists.

The crowd was attacked by the police and 5 members of TAYAD were taken into custody.

On July 16, TAYAD members started a march from Istanbul to Ankara calling for action for the lawyers and their clients who are on death fast demanding fair trial.

During the course of the march, the activists were detained 5 times. Activists Musa Aslan, Hasan Öktem, Hasan Kocaman, Ali Dilmen, Yıldız Turan, Berkay Köroğlu ve Didem Akman's mother Zülfiye Akman are still in custody.
