Issuing a press release on International Women's Day (8 March) activities led by Democratic Free Women's Movement (DÖKH), Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Women's Council has announced that this year's activities will be dedicated to three Kurdish women killed in Paris on 9 January, Sakine Cansız, a co-founder of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), fidan Doğan, representative of the Kurdistan National Congress (KNK) in Paris, and Leyla Şaylemez, member of the Kurdish youth movement.
The 8 March activities of Kurdish women will also put emphasis on the isolation of Kurdish people's leader Abdullah Öcalan and the rise in women killed by men. A commission has been established for the planning of this year's activities across the country, in the Kurdish region in particular.
The activities led by DÖKH will last one week from 1 to 8 March in Kurdish cities. The first mass demonstrations will be staged in the provinces of Êlîh (Batman) and Mersin on 1 March, to be followed by activities in Sêrt (Siirt) on 2 March and in Gurgum (Maraş), Semsûr (Adıyaman) and Meletî (Malatya) on the 3rd, when women will also stage a mass demo in the main Kurdish city Amed (Diyarbakır). The activities in Gurgum (Maraş) also include a mass march to the graveyard of Fidan Doğan in Elbistan. The demos in Wan and Bazîd (Doğubeyazıt) on the 4th will be followed by mass demos in Mêrdîn (Mardin), Mûş, Gever (Yüksekova) and Şirnex (Şırnak) on the 5th and a march in Bêdlîs (Bitlis) on the 6th.
A mass demo is expected to be staged in Adana on 7 January, to be followed by a final demo in Dersim on the 8th, which is expected to be broadly participated by the people from neighboring provinces.
Commemoration ceremonies will take place along the week in memory of Sakine Cansız, Fidan Doğan and Leyla Şaylemez.
Dates haven't been ascertained yet for the activities in western metropolises such as Istanbul, İzmir and Ankara.
In the notice it was pointed out that Kurdish women describe the 21st century as the century of women, and added; "Those who say 'kill women first' are very self those who start wars. Social violence and wars are being maintained by violence, rape and abuse against women".
