Hundreds of people in about 80 houses in Sur district of Diyarbakir province are in dire straits as they remain under quarantine and cannot provide food and similar needs for themselves.
As the number of daily COVID-19 cases in Diyarbakır has soared over 2 thousand, thousands of people who have tested positive remain under quarantine. Some houses in the city centre and neighbourhoods in the countryside have been put in quarantine. Nearly 80 houses are under quarantine in Iskenderpasa neighbourhood, which has a population of 8 thousand in Sur district. It is reported that citizens who are poor and working day-wage have difficulty receiving food during the quarantine.
POOR FAMILIES
Speaking to MA news agency, Iskenderpasa Neighbourhood Headman Ali Ürün stated that the number of people infected with the corona virus has remarkably increased in the last month and a half and added that nearly 80 households are currently under quarantine, and these are poor families. He noted that some of these families have to go out to meet their needs.
NO GOV’T AID
The headman pointed out that these people who work in coffee shops, bakeries, restaurants and similar places for daily wages have been victimized, with no gov’t aid. Ürün urged the government to deliver aid to those under quarantine. “The governorship, district governor or municipality should deliver food and bread to those under quarantine every day. I've also talked to families that make a living on daily wages. The citizens ask 'who will bring us bread as we remain home for 20 or 14 days?' We try to help them as much as we can, but unfortunately it is not enough.”
CALL FOR VACCINATION
The headman also urged the residents of the neighbourhood to be vaccinated, saying that vaccination should be done to combat the disease.
