80-year-old forced to "protest" in front of HDP

80-year-old Halime Başal has been forced by blackmail to sit in front of the HDP building in Amed and "reclaim" her son, who has been fighting in the guerrilla ranks since 1992.

The Turkish state also uses alleged protest actions as a means of special war against the Kurdish freedom movement. In an absurd reversal of the Peace Mothers initiative, the regime has been holding a "protest" in front of the HDP headquarters in Amed (Diyarbakır) since September 3, 2019, in which some 10 to 15 relatives of guerrilla fighters "reclaim" their sons and daughters from the HDP. This action is intended to establish a link between the HDP and guerrillas and to criminalize the party. The permanent rally is not a civil protest, but a concerted action by the Ministry of Interior. The "protesters" are always brought in front of the HDP building in a similar way. They are called by the Interior Ministry or the police and told that their children have been "kidnapped to the mountains," promised money or pressured.

The "protesters" are usually the same people. In order to increase their numbers, special departments of the Ministry of Interior try to mobilize more relatives by all means. One of the women who was thus brought by coercion in front of the HDP building is 80-year-old Halime Başal from the village of Karabağ in the province of Siirt. Her son Zahir Başal has been fighting alongside the guerrillas since 1992. She has another son who works as a village headman. In early March, she received a visit from some officials. They threatened the 80-year-old to appoint a forced administrator in place of her son as village headman if she did not take part in the action in front of the HDP building. Because of these threats, Başal allowed herself to be forced to sit in front of the HDP building. After two days, she wanted to return. She was again threatened with the removal of her son and was offered money. Despite everything, she returned to her village.
