84 people detained in Istanbul on May Day

As many as 84 people were taken into custody during May 1 celebrations in Istanbul city.

While Turkish security forces did not allow any gathering at the symbolic Taksim Square, several individuals and groups attempted to get to the area.

Those wanting to reach Taksim Square were intervened by the police and a number of people were taken into custody. According to reports from Istanbul Police Department, number of detainees rose to 84.

60 of these were detained in Besiktas, 16 in Beyoglu, 6 in Maltepe and 2 in Sisli.
