Activists in Bilbao demand respect for Shengal

Worldwide repudiation of the agreement between Baghdad and the KDP about Shengal continues to be expressed through actions and demonstrations.

Actions are taking place throughout Europe to condemn the Iraqi central government and KDP agreement on Shengal.

The Kurdistanekin platform Elkartasuna Ekimena organized a rally in Bilbao in support to the self-government of Sinjar and against the agreement between Baghdad and the KDP.

The Platform said in a statement: "November has put the Yazidi people back in the spotlight. Massacred dozens of times during their history, the Yazidis suffered the last genocide attempt in 2014. In August of that year the Islamic State attacked and massacred them. Thousands of people were kidnapped and enslaved and thousands of women were sold in the Raqqa market.”

The statement reminded that “on that occasion, neither the Iraqi Government nor the Autonomous Government of Kurdistan did anything to prevent the massacre. On the contrary, the peshmerga withdrew from Sinjar hours before ISIS mercenaries appeared. At those critical moments, only the YPG and YPJ and the PKK came to the Yazidi aid, opening a humanitarian corridor and allowing tens of thousands of Yazidis to escape certain death.”

Now, six years on, Turkey and the United States, with the collaboration of the Iraqi government and the KDP, threaten Shengal once again.
