Activists in front of UN call for solidarity with earthquake survivors

Activists carrying out a vigil for the freedom of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan in front of the UN in Geneva commemorated the victims of Monday’s earthquakes and called for solidarity with survivors.

As part of the 'Dem dema azadiye' [Time for Freedom] campaign, a sit-in has been held every Wednesday Öcalan in front of the UN headquarters in Geneva since January 25, 2021. A moment of silence was observed in memory of the martyrs of the Kurdistan freedom struggle, and thousands of people who lost their lives from the earthquakes in the cities of Kurdistan and Turkey.

Speaking at yesterday’s vigil, Geneva Democratic Kurdish Community Centre Co-chair Erdal Atasoy said that the Kurdish people have been subjected to wars and massacres for 100 years. “The people of Kurdistan are now facing an earthquake disaster. The destruction caused by the earthquakes in Kurdistan has now come to light. The Turkish state is blocking the aid delivered to the earthquake regions. We should strongly support the aid campaign introduced by Heyva Sor (Kurdish Red Crescent).”
