Ahmet Karamus: Öcalan's call opens the way to peace and democracy

KNK co-chair Ahmet Karamus confirmed support for Abdullah Öcalan's call, saying that it opens the way to peace and democracy.

Ahmet Karamus, co-chair of the Kurdistan National Congress (KNK), said they support Öcalan's call for "Peace and a Democratic Society." Speaking to ANF, he said: "The primary goal of this call is to establish the legal framework for the Kurdish movement’s political demands within a democratic transformation that recognizes different identities under Turkish law, expands freedoms, ensures rights on the basis of equality and justice, and materializes this process through restructuring."

Karamus emphasized that Turkey must take steps to initiate this process on a legal and democratic basis, highlighting the importance of recognizing the Kurdish people's identity and cultural rights and establishing their legal and social foundations. He said: "These steps will not only pave the way for Kurds but also enable all peoples of Turkey to coexist based on equality and democracy. This call is of critical importance not only for Turkey but also for all Kurdish people in the region," Karamus added that, for this process to succeed, the state and international actors must clearly define their responsibilities.

Pointing out that the call for a peaceful and democratic resolution of the Kurdish issue could have significant consequences, Karamus continued: "The demands for Kurdish identity, language, and cultural rights, as well as regional status, have become directly linked to Turkey’s democratization and legal transformation. This issue should be resolved in parallel with Turkey’s democratization process, ensuring equal rights for the Kurdish people. Therefore, Kurdish identity, cultural rights, and other demands must be secured within a legal framework shaped by social justice and equality."

The Kurdish movement is taking responsibility as a whole

Karamus noted that Kurdish political movements across all regions support this call, adding that resolving the issue in North Kurdistan would directly affect the situation in South Kurdistan and Rojava. He valued the statements by Kurdish political actors expressing their willingness to contribute to the process. "This process is not just about North Kurdistan. Başûr (South Kurdistan), Rojava, and Rojhilat Kurdistan are also affected. Kurdish political movements must unite around common solutions and contribute to the development of a stronger process."

Karamus added: "We want our political parties in Bakur (North Kurdistan), our opinion leaders, and all social dynamics to embrace this process. There is no need for anyone to feel hopeless. We must support this process with great morale and motivation. We consider this call to have a perspective leading to peace and resolution. The main goal in solving the Kurdish question is to ensure peace and dialogue, build a democratic society, and pave the way for democratic politics."

The stance of international actors and the EU

Evaluating the European Union’s position on the matter, Karamus stated: "The EU has not yet made an institutional statement, but many EU member states have expressed their support for this process. International support is crucial for Turkey to resolve this issue democratically. The ball is now in Turkey’s court. A legal and democratic transformation of this process can be achieved through pressure mechanisms from international actors."

Karamus emphasized that international institutions such as the EU and the United Nations must exert the necessary pressure on Turkey to accelerate the process. He said: "This is no longer just an internal issue for Turkey but has become a global matter. Concrete steps must be taken to recognize the rights of the Kurdish people within the framework of international law."

Steps must be taken on the basis of democracy and law

Karamus stressed that Turkey must implement democratic reforms concerning the Kurdish question, and added that reforms are necessary both for recognizing Kurdish people's rights and for democratizing society. He noted that legislative reforms within the parliament and the establishment of committees for this purpose are essential to preparing a democratic foundation.

Karamus pointed out the importance of advancing the process both for ensuring social peace and for the trajectory of the regional Kurdish issue. He said: "This process can serve as a model and a unique path to peace, not only for the peoples of Turkey but for all peoples, including the Kurds, by uniting them around a common democratic vision."
