AKP considering short compulsory military service

Several papers today write about the possibility to shorten the term of compulsory military service being suggested by the AKP government.

Mustafa Elitaş, AKP Group Interim Chairperson, had said that "it is possible to shorten the long-term service from 15 months to 12 for private soldiers". Something PM Recep Tayyip Erdoğan echoed speaking on television. The PM added that the duration of military service for reserve officers will remain at six months.

The PM also said that "the decision will be taken with the consensus of the Turkish Armed Forces authorities as well as Defense Ministry officials".

Back in July, opposition CHP deputy Osman Korutürk had submitted a bill proposal to the parliament signed by 35 CHP deputies proposing a short term of 9 months for privates and sergeants, and a long term of 6 months for interim officers.
