AKP regime to transform HDP municipalities into outposts

The AKP regime placed X-ray scanners and guard posts in front of HDP’s Cizre, Idil and Silopi municipalities. One police chief was captured on camera admitting they acted “outside the law”, knowing that they can rely on impunity policies.

Last night, the police placed guard posts and X-ray scanners in front of the Cizre, Idil and Silopi municipalities in Sirnak which were taken back from trustees in the March 31 local elections.

The police cut off the streets leading to the municipality building before placing the surveillance structures in Cizre. A large crowd including co-mayors Mehmet Zirig and Berivan Kutlu gathered by the municipality immediately after word spread. Zirrig said the district governor, who he called a trustee, cannot implement such an arbitrary practice and added: “We will not bow down to the trustees.”

Zirrig said they didn’t receive a written order. When tensions rose, the district police chief arrived at the municipality and argued that they were taking precautions for the safety of the citizens. The police said the governorate and district governorate had issued the order.

Co-mayor Zirrig continuously asked if the police chief was “acting outside the law”, to which the chief said, “Yes, we are.”

After hours of high tensions, the police placed the X-ray scanner by the entrance of the municipality. Zirrig said they will object to the placement.

A similar series of events happened in Silopi around the same time. The Co-mayors protested the placement of the police guard post. Late at night, the police also placed an X-ray scanner by the entrance of the Idil Municipality.
