Ankara Governor's Office: 944 taken into custody in protests

A statement published on the website of the Turkish capital’s Governor’s office said that 944 people were taken into custody in Gezi Park protests across Ankara.

According to the statement released by the governor's office, 248 plainclothes policemen and 133 others were wounded in protests.

The Governor's Office, describing protestors as “illegal organization members who have an ideological aim and hide behind innocent feelings of young people”, underlined that “we are determined to bring those to book who attempt to disturb the peace of our city”.

The governor's office defined the excessive use of police force against protestors as “professional intervention”, remarking that investigation has been launched into security officers who acted in contrary to the principles of proportionality and necessity during interventions.

The office described the protests across the city as "illegal demonstrations based on violence that illegal organizations intend to keep going".
