Around 100 students taken into custody in Denizli

Around 100 students of Pamukkale University were taken into custody in the western province of Denizli on Friday afternoon when police severely attacked the demo in support to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and Kurdistan Women’s Liberation Party (PAJK) prisoners on fast.

Tension broke out in the campus when private security officers of the university tried to prevent the march and then attacked the demonstrating group. Students were soon later attacked by hundreds of riot policemen who had already been waiting outside the campus ready for an intervention in the demonstration. Besides around 100 students who were detained on the campus for allegedly joining the demonstration, many others were taken into custody following police raids in a number of student houses. Raid operations are reported to continue and the number of detainees is expected to increase.

More and more university students have been staging demonstrations and hunger strikes in campus areas in support to prisoners whose strike has entered the day 53. People displaying solidarity with the prisoners' strike are however being subjected to intervention and severe attack by Turkish police in violation of the right to demonstrate.

Three days ago, Ankara's Middle East Technical University (ODTU) campus turned into a battlefield as police attacked students demonstrating in solidarity with the prisoners on fast. Students set some buildings to fire, while the intense gas bombs thrown by police started a fire in the forested area on the campus. On the same day, families of prisoners on fast were also denied permission to march to the office of Minister of Justice in the capital city.

Solidarity demonstrations by university students are being staged in many cities across the country including Istanbul, Ankara, Mersin, Antalya, Siirt and Adýyaman. More universities are expected to join the solidarity action in the following days.

On the other hand, students started an alternate and indefinite hunger strike on the campus of Istanbul Technical University (ITU) and Middle East Technical University. The solidarity actions are also supported by many other left-winger groups.
