Asya Abdullah: Our demand for a corridor still in place
PYD (Democratic Union Party) Co-President Asya Abdullah said their demand for a corridor into the besieged town of Kobanê was still in place, remarking that opening a corridor was essential to support the ongoing resistance against ISIS gangs attacking the town.
Giving information about the present situation in Kobanê, Asya Abdullah pointed out that ISIS gangs were continuing to bring in weapon reinforcements from other regions, and that these included tanks and cannons.
Abdullah said the attacks gangs carry out with these weapons are targeting the town centre and civilian areas, recalling that 8 civilians have been killed in these attacks in the past two days.
The PYD Co-President continued, giving the following information; "Eight civilians have been martyrised and 19 others wounded in the last two days. Today's attacks have caused the death of three civilians and injury of 12 others, including 5 children and a woman, who have been sent to North Kurdistan for treatment. Other wounded are receiving treatment in Kobanê through our own means."
Abdullah also recalled that there were three hospitals in Kobanê, and that all of them have been destroyed in the battle. She added that a recently built hospital with 260 beds has also been demolished in the ISIS attacks.
The PYD Co-President stated that coalition aircraft continued with operations against ISIS but remained weak in counteracting the heavy weaponry used by the gangs. Abdullah said ISIS presence in Botan and Kaniya Kurda neighborhoods remained, adding that; "they have devastated the scenes of clashes in the town centre. The encirclement around Kobanê also remains."
Regarding the neeed of the civilians in Kobanê, Abdullah said; "There are civilians in the town, and more are coming but they have needs to be met. All the villages around the town have been devastated. Inside the town, all the places meeting the daily needs of the people have been destroyed. We call on international aid organisations to develop a project for the rebuilding of the demolished areas in Kobanê. Aid in both military aspect and for civilians needs to reach the town. Opening a corridor is essential in this regard. Kobanê needs international support."
