Athens: Oruç Reis threatens peace

The Greek government condemned the Turkish state that redeploys the seismic research vessel Oruç Reis to the Mediterranean, calling it a "direct threat to peace and security in the region".

The Turkish state sent Oruç Reis to the Eastern Mediterranean accompanied by two warships. It is reported that the ship will be in the area from October 12 to October 22.

In a written statement, the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the redeploying of the ship poses a "direct threat to peace and security in the region".

'TURKEY CAUSES REGIONAL INSTABILITY'

Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs considers Turkey "not reliable" and "against dialogue" adding that Turkey is a key factor of instability from Aegean Sea to Libya, Cyprus, Syria and Iraq, now in Nagorno-Karabakh".

There has been a severe tension between Athens and Ankara, as the Turkish state has deployed seismic research vessels in the Eastern Mediterranean from 10 August to mid-September. Ships operated on the Greek island of Kastellorizo 2 kilometers to the coast of Turkey (Kızılhisar). This area is considered to be potentially rich in natural gas.

The crisis has not end, although escalation has partially dropped as Athens and Ankara agreed to hold talks last month.

At the European Union summit held in early October, it was warned that sanctions would be imposed if Ankara does not stop energy exploration activities off Cyprus and Greece. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas is also expected to visit Ankara next Wednesday.

Greek Prime Minister Kiriakos Miçotakis, who gave an interview to the Greek newspaper Ta Nea revealed that they were not "seeking conflict" and "nobody should seek conflict."
