Azerbaijan bombs historic Armenian church in Karabakh

It is reported that Azerbaijan has bombed a historical church in Upper Karabakh.

The Armenian government announced that the Azerbaijani army has attacked and damaged a historical church in Nagorno-Karabakh.

The Press Center affiliated with the government said on its Facebook page, "Azerbaijani armed forces have bombed the Armenian church Ghazhanchetsots (Holy Savior Cathedral) in the city of Shusha".

The Press Center also shared photos showing that the exterior of the church has been damaged and that there are ruins inside.

Built between the years of 1868 and 1887, the church was damaged in 1920 when the Armenians in the city were massacred by the Azerbaijanis. During the Nagorno-Karabakh war in the early 1990s, Azerbaijan used the cathedral as an arsenal where hundreds of missiles were stored. Restored after the war, the church was rebuilt in 1998. The church, which is 35 meters high, comes into prominence as one of the biggest Armenian churches in the world.

Recent conflicts started with a large scale operation of Azerbaijan against Nagorno-Karabakh on 27 September with the support of the Turkish state.
