Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) parliamentary group deputy chair Pervin Buldan has tabled a parliamentary question concerning the armed attack which targeted people joining a wedding ceremony in Batman province on 2 November.
Reminding that the armed attack and left one person, Özcan Temel, dead and six others wounded, Buldan noted that after the armed attack the group also raided an internet cafe and threatened and assaulted the people there with cleavers.
Citing the statements of eyewitnesses who said that it was a group of Free Cause Party (Hür Dava Partisi or HÜDA-PAR) members who attacked the people at the wedding ceremony and the internet cafe, Buldan called attention to the recently increasing public concerns over the re-eruption of hezbollah activities in the region.
Buldan addressed the following questions to the Interior Minister Muammer Güler;
- Have officials launched an investigation into the incident? How many people have been taken into custody or arrested in relation to the incident?
- Which political force has encouraged the assailants to carry out these attacks?
- Do these attacks indicate an intention to make Batman a place like it was back in 90's, open to the attacks of some forces backed by the state? Has the Ministry of the Interior taken any precautions to prevent further similar incidents? If it has, what are these precautions?
HÜDA-PAR is widely considered to be an offshoot of the Islamist Hizbullah movement which worked with the Turkish state in its fight against the PKK and other Kurdish activists. The organization, which also draws is membership from local Kurds, was founded with cooperation from the state and has been accused of committing many murders and acts of terror in the past.
