BDP: 2014 to be a year of great struggle

BDP Co-chairs Gültan Kışanak and Selahattin Demirtaş have issued a New Year message wishing for 2014 to be a year of peace and freedom. The message underlined that 2014 will be a year of great struggle both for democratisation and the process of resolution, adding; "Our peoples will be the victors at the end of this struggle".

In their message the BDP Co-chairs continued: "While closing 2013, which saw significant developments for the world, first and foremost for the Turkey and the Middle East we are entering the new year hoping for a fair peaceful world. We wish the new year to bring all the peoples of the world peace, equality, freedom and happiness."

BDP co-chairs said 2013 was a year in which there were historic developments that will shape the future of the struggles of the peoples for freedom and democracy, both in Turkey and in the Middle East, and evaluated the new process launched for a resolution of the Kurdish question through dialogue as undoubtedly the most important development of 2013.

"For the first time Turkey has the opportunity to achieve a democratic resolution. Most importantly, and the most significant gain of the process, is the end to the pain of loss. Everyone has now seen that resolution and peace is an essential need that cannot be postponed", Demirtaş and Kışanak said. They also pointed out that the fact that the Kurdish question has reached the stage of resolution through dialogue and negotiation has raised hopes of democratisation and freedom, and that Kurds, Turks, Alevis, workers, women, environmentalists, youth and all the oppressed have raised demands for equality and freedom.

Noting that while this is happening in Turkey, in the Middle East conflict has intensified and hopes of peace and stability have been put on hold, the statement continued; "However, in the heart of the Middle East, in Rojava, despite attacks and persecution, the Kurdish people have established their own democratic administration. The revolution in Rojava has demonstrated that all oppressed peoples can only guarantee their democratic futures through their own organised struggle."

BDP co-chairs said it is essential in new year that the resolution process is taken forward and put on a firm legal foundation of negotiations that safeguards the existing peace. It is the responsibility of the government and parliament to carry out the necessary reforms to realise democratisation, the statement underlined.

"The path to gaining more democracy and freedom and purging the parallel state lies in taking possession of the resolution process and an organised struggle for democracy. In this respect 2014 will be a year of great struggle both for democratisation and the process of resolution. Our peoples will be the victors at the end of this struggle", Demirtaş and Kışanak said and added that they would with these emotions like to wish the peoples of Turkey and the Middle East, first and foremost the people of Rojava, and all humankind a 2014 of peace and freedom.
