BDP demands the release of lawyers detained today

Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) deputy co-chair in charge of law and human rights issues, Meral Danış Beştaş, released a statement condemning the detention of dozens of lawyers today. Lawyers inside Çağlayan Courthouse were detained during their protest against the police attack on demonstrators in Taksim on Tuesday.

Demanding the urgent release of lawyers, Beştaş said Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's statements encouraged the officials who have today dared to drag lawyers along the ground in front of the statue of justice as they protested the use of violence against protestors.

Pointing out that the attitude towards protestors and the violence against lawyers would lead to further violence, Beştaş said the government must urgently end using a language of violence and the violent attacks on protestors.

Beştaş demanded the urgent release of lawyers, investigation of the officials who have committed malpractice by subjecting lawyers to violence, and called on all institutions and establishments, the Union of Turkish Bar Associations in particular, to response to the unlawful practice against lawyers.
