BDP deputy called for inquiry into Imralý

Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) group deputy chair and Iðdýr deputy Pervin Buldan tabled a parliamentary question on Friday asking for the resolution of the problems and right violations related to the status and current circumstances of Imralý Prison.

Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan has been held in the prison on Ýmralý Island (Bursa) since his capture in February 1999. He has been denied meeting with his family and lawyers for the last 13 months often on the grounds of ‘defective coaster’ and ‘adverse weather conditions’.

It has been stated in the parliamentary question that the Turkish state has been violating the Convention on Human Rights, the Turkish Constitution and the Law on Criminal Execution for creating a private execution system on Imralý Island by changing the semi-open prison to a house of detention and trial.

BDP group deputy chair reminded of concern over the health conditions of Mr. Öcalan and pointed out that Imralý Island is not a suitable place to live for many years considering the high rate of humidity on the island and the inevitability of physical and psychological disorders to appear as a consequence of the solitary confinement.

Buldan ended saying that “For the sake of the principles of democracy and law, it became essential to launch an inquiry into all aspects of the unlawful and unprecedented isolation system in Ýmralý”.
