In a statement on the police attack against yesterday’s demonstration in solidarity with prisoners on hunger strike, Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Bitlis MP Hüsamettin Zenderlioðlu said that “We will reclaim our democratic rights till to the end”.
Eight people, including a 80 year-old man, were taken into custody in Bitlis on Sunday when the peaceful demonstration in the city was violently attacked by police. Five of the detainees were released at night, while three others were referred to the court.
Zenderlioðlu pointed out that the police deliberately attacked and detained people voicing peaceful and democratic demands. Clearly their aim, he said, was to try and stop the struggle in the region.
“Yesterday’s police attack is a demonstration of the fact that the AKP government doesn’t respect even a slightest opponent voice and demand for right, social sensivity and human values”, he added.
