Belgian group takes over 'Freedom for Öcalan Vigil' in Strasbourg

The Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan Initiative launched the vigil in Strasbourg, France, on June 25, 2012 in order to secure the physical freedom of Öcalan. The vigil is the longest-standing action of the Kurds in Europe.

The Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan Vigil was launched on 25 June 25 2012 in Strasbourg to ensure the physical freedom of the Kurdish people's leader and to break the isolation imposed on him. The vigil has entered its 536th week.

The action, which is held at the point where European institutions meet and is carried out by a different group of Kurds living in Europe every week, was taken over by a group of activists from Belgium this week.

Belgian Kurdish Community Centre Co-Chair Tori Rojhat delivered a speech on behalf of the group, saying, “Our leader who has been kept on the island of Imrali for 24 years has been subjected to torture and isolation. On behalf of the Kurds in Belgium, we have come to Strasbourg to attend the freedom vigil for Öcalan.”

“We, the Kurds, are going through a very delicate and historic process, and we want to take our place in this struggle,” he added.
