Beştaş: Withdrawal should be followed by government's steps
Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) deputy co-chair Meral Danış Beştaş spoke to ANF about the Parliamentary Commission established to investigate ways for social peace and to assess the peace process, as part of the process of talks between Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan and the Turkish intelligence agency.
The commission will initiate its work in the coming days with the participation of the ruling AK party and BDP members. The opposition CHP (Republican People's Party) and MHP (Nationalist Movement Party) seem to be indicating they will not take part in the commission. AKP has already announced the names of its members to join the commission for which BDP will also name its members soon.
Referring to the Parliamentary Commission, Danış, in charge of BDP's Commission for Legal and Human Rights Affairs, pointed out that AKP members in the commission should act by leaving the prejudices of the past aside and work for the establishment of an equal and free life. This is what people expect from the commission, she underlined.
Referring to the withdrawal of Kurdish guerrillas from Turkish borders, Beştaş said this would not solve the Kurdish question but instead pave the way for the discussion of the issue in a more proper way. "Withdrawal will be a step that will establish a ground for making arrangements and overcoming obstacles to the solution. Should the withdrawal take place, the government should take a number of steps in the social sphere to ensure that politics and civil society can grow stronger in non-conflict environment where arms have no place" she added.
