Broad protests across Germany before Erdoğan's visit

In ten cities in Germany rallies and demonstrations took place against the invitation of the Turkish President Erdoğan by Federal President Steinmeier.

In response to a call from more than one hundred organizations for the "Erdogan not welcome" platform, protests began in many cities a week before the Turkish President's visit to Germany. Yesterday in Berlin, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Essen, Frankfurt, Hannover, Stuttgart, Bielefeld, Bremen and Darmstadt protested both against the Erdoğan regime and against the federal government. Mass demonstrations will take place on September 28th in Berlin and on September 29th in Cologne.

Berlin

In Berlin a demonstration took place from Hermannplatz to Oranienplatz, which was supported by many different groups. On the front transparency read: "Erdogan kills, Merkel imprisons". Hundreds of signs bearing Erdoğan's portrait and the inscription "Stop" were carried along the demonstration. Speakers protested against federal support for the Erdoğan regime.

Darmstadt

In Darmstadt a demonstration organized by the Democratic Society Center and Rosa Women's Council against Erdoğan's state reception in Germany, in which many leftist Turkish organizations took part. The demonstrators marched from the central station to the city center with a banner saying " Erdogan not welcome" and slogans.

Stuttgart

A demonstration in Stuttgart started on the Lautenschlagerstraße and was supported by many different left-wing organizations. The demonstrators distributed leaflets and shouted slogans like "Erdoğan is a murderer and fascist" and "Erdoğan is bombing, Merkel is funding".

At a demonstration in Hanover demonstrators pointed to the dirty relations between the Federal Government and the Turkish state and protested against the reception of Erdoğan on the red carpet in Berlin.
