Brutal crackdown staged on protestors condemning Atakan's death
Brutal crackdown staged on protestors condemning Atakan's death
Protest marches have been staged today all over Turkey to condemn the killing of 22 year old Ahmet Atakan during protests in the southern province of Hatay last night. Clashes are taking place in many cities that are witnessing mass protest demos joined by tens of thousands.
Police continues to attack demonstrators in Atakan's hometown Hatay, in the neighborhood of Armutlu, where thousands have taken to the streets today to bid farewell to the 22 year old protestor.
People have put up barricades on the streets and set them on fire as clashes continue. Three people have reportedly been hospitalized including one in critical situation. Besides condemning the killing of Atakan, demonstrators are also chanting slogans against the AKP goverment's Syria policies and in solidarity with the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Clashes between demonstrators and police forces are also continuing on Istiklal Avenue and Taksim area. Police, using intense tear gas and rubber bullets, are increasing the violence against protestors who are being joined by more and more people as the night draws near. Many people have been detained and hospitalized, most of them suffering injuries caused by a tear gas canister.
Thousands who gathered in the district of Kadıköy in the evening have taken ferries to join the protest in Taksim. Demonstrators are chanting the slogan "We will take Taksim tonight". BDP (Peace and Democracy Party) deputies Sebahat Tuncel, Sırrı Süreyya Önder and Levent Tüzel have also joined the demo and the sit-in on Istiklal Avenue.
Riot and plainclothes policemen are waiting in groups on all streets leading to the Taksim Square.
Clashes also broke out in the Gazi neighborhood densely populated by Alewis and Kurds.
The Turkey-Sweden U21 match was also abandoned because of the intense tear gas that has wafted down to Kasımpaşa from Taksim.
Tens of thousands have also gathered at Güven Park in the Turkish capital Ankara as of early evening hours. Police didn't intervene the demonstrators until they swelled in numbers and disturbed the traffic flow. The attack came when protestors didn't leave the area and responded to the police warning with slogans. Kızılay Square has been cleared of protestors who have dispersed around but are not leaving the area.Clashes are also going on in the district of Dikmen.
Protestors in İzmir were also subjected to police violence as they gathered at the central Gündoğdu Square and started a march to the AKP office in Basmane district.Clashes are continuing.
In Mersin, where people also took to the streets in mass to condemn the killing of Atakan, police attacked the group violently at Barış Square. Many were detained and wounded.
Protestors in Eskişehir have suspended all train services from the city by blocking railways and making trains stop.
Demonstrators in Adana, Bursa and Denizli were also attacked by police with pressure water and tear gas.Clashes between police and protestors are going on in Adana.
