The hearing of the trial against “unidentified murders” was held at Ankara 13th High Criminal Court on Wednesday.
Twelve people allegedly involved in the murder of Abdulmecit Baskın, former head of the registry office of Altındağ, in 1993, are being tried in the case, including Mehmet Ağar, former Minister of the Interior and chief of police, retired lieutenant colonel and former MIT (Turkish Intelligence Service) executive Korkut Eken, İbrahim Şahin, former president of the special operations department, and Ayhan Çarkın, former police officer for special operation teams.
The indictment asks for life sentence for the twelve suspects who are accused of “premeditated murder” and “creating a criminal organization for the purpose of engaging in criminal activity”, defending that Baskın was murdered by special operation teams within the knowledge of Mehmet Ağar and upon the instruction of İbrahim Şahin.
The hearing was also attended by BDP (Peace and Democracy Party) group deputy chair Pervin Buldan whose husband, Savaş Buldan, also fell a victim to unidentified murders in 90's.
Buldan who used her Twitter account to evaluate the trial said that “This will be the first time I stand face to face with the murderers of my husband”, referring to Ayhan Çarkın and Ziya Bandırmalıoğlu who are claimed to have killed her husband as well.
"Korkut Eken and Ercan Ersoy are also here. There are a series of murderers here. Storms are breaking within my heart", Buldan said on a twitter post.
Former special operation team police officer Çarkın confessed during the trial that “We inflicted repression and cruelty on the honorable Kurdish people who were introduced to us as separatist people”. Çarkın called on Mehmet Ağar to tell all he knows about the murders, and defended that all police officers who worked for special operation teams from 1993 to 1996 should also appear in dock as suspects.
Çarkın stressed that the term's President Süleyman Demirel and Prime Minister Tansu Çiller should also appear in court in relation with the list of Kurdish businessmen to be murdered.
Accepting Ayhan Çarkın's demand to be provided with a report on his mental health, the court board ruled the continuation of detention for all suspects and adjourned the hearing to 19 February 2014.
