Call to international organizations to act for hunger strikers

The new leadership and executives of Heyva Sor a Kurdistanê visited hunger strikers in Strasbourg as the first of their commitment to the Kurdish community.

14 activists have gone on hunger strike on 17 December 2018 in the French city of Strasbourg demanding the end of isolation against Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan.

The hunger strikers are receiving visits from people, parties, politicians, activists from different places in Europe.

Today, Kurdish Red Crescent Heyva Sor a Kurdistanê was among those who visited the protesters.

The organisation celebrated its congress last weekend and the new leadership and executives visited hunger strikers as the first of their commitment to the Kurdish community.

Rojvan Bilgin, head of the humanitarian organization, said that the situation of the activists is now at a critical stage.

Bilgin stated that the health situation of the activists was deteriorating and added: “Heyva Sora a Kurdistanê have come to visit the hunger strikers. Two of our doctors are already constantly dealing with the health of the activists here. However, I did a new health screening today. The morale of the activists is good. Unfortunately, this is not the case with their health. There are very serious problems, including excessive weight loss. These are preliminary symptoms. The demands of the activists must be taken into consideration. As a health worker and as a human rights activist, I believe that international institutions should get involved. Our expectation is that the demands are accepted to avoid serious consequences.”

Dr. Bilgin also called on Doctors Without Borders to visit the hunger strikers.

Doctor Fahrettin Gülşen who has been following the hunger strikers since the beginning made the fifth general health screening on the 43rd day of fast.
