CHP Istanbul chair sentenced to 9 years and 8 months

Kaftancıoğlu was charged with 5 separate offenses.

Republican People’s Party (CHP) Istanbul provincial branch chairperson Canan Kaftancıoğlu has received a prison sentence in relation to her social media posts between 2012 and 2017.

Istanbul 37th Heavy Penal Court has sentenced Kaftancıoğlu to 9 years, 8 months and 20 days in prison.

The CHP administrator has been sentenced to;

1 year and 6 months for “spreading propaganda for an illegal organization”,

1 year, 6 months and 20 days for “publicly insulting a public officer”,

1 year and 6 months for “publicly insulting the President”,

1 year and 3 months for “publicly insulting the State”,

2 year and 8 months for “inciting the people to hatred and animosity”.

During the hearing, when the court board asked Kaftancıoğlu to speak her last words, she said; “This is not my last but first word. I will never give up on my thoughts and words, no matter the price. Whether inside or outside (of prison), I will never give up on my dreams. I will never have a final say. The season of “us” has begun. He has lost and we have won, 80 million people have won.”
