Çiçek: Constitution cannot be drafted with present Commission
Speaker of Turkish Parliament Cemil Çiçek has sent a letter to the four parties in the Parliament's Constitution Conciliation Commission stating that a new constitution could not be drafted with the present Commission. The letter has been sent to the AKP (Justice and Development Party), CHP (Republican People's Party), MHP (Nationalist Movement Party) and the BDP (Peace and Democracy Party).
Çiçek wrote in the letter that "Despite the significant achievements witnessed in this period, it is apparent that there will be no conciliation on the entire constitution. This is a natural consequence of the article six of working principles and the red lines the parties say are the reason for their being and cannot desist from".
Çiçek stated that it is no use for him to maintain his position as the president of the Commission under these circumstances.
Speaker of the Parliament attached to the letter some documents on the current status of the constitutional works, and added that these would be published on the website of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) if approved and desired.
