Co-mayors of Akdeniz Municipality accused for their participation in events and demos

The accusations against the Democracy and Equality Party (DEM Party) co-mayors of Akdeniz Municipality, Hoşyar Sarıyıldız and Nuriye Arslan, related to their participation in certain events in 2024.

As part of an investigation initiated by the Mersin Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, Hoşyar Sarıyıldız and Nuriye Arslan, co-mayors of Akdeniz Municipality, as well as city council members Özgür Çağlar, Neslihan Oruç, Yakup Danış, and Hikmet Bakırhan, were taken into custody on Friday. The lawyers will be able to see their clients today, after the end of a 24-hour ban.

The co-mayors and council members have been charged with 'terrorist propaganda,' 'membership in a terrorist organization,' 'financing a terrorist organization,' and 'violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations’.

These charges are reportedly related to the participation of the co-mayors and councilors in events held in 2024.
