Coronavirus measures do not apply to HDP prisoners

The Turkish government announced that it has suspended transfers of prisoners. However, HDP executives have been transferred from Mardin to Urfa prison.

Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Mardin Provincial co-chair Perihan Ağaoğlu and HDP Mardin former Provincial co-chair Musa Alkan, who had been taken into custody on 29 February and remanded in custody on 6 March in Mardin, were transferred from Mardin E Type Closed Prison to Urfa T Type Closed Prison.

The transfer was carried out on Friday night and it happened despite the announcement by Turkish Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gul who had said that as a precautionary measure in the coronavirus emergency all transfers had been postponed for two weeks.

Erdal Kuzu, lawyer for both HDP executives said: "We have to asked whether the coronavirus measures do not include HDP members. Transferring prisoners during this process means that my clients' access to health and their right to life are not taken into consideration."
